Sustainable software depends as much on people and practices as it does on code. In this talk, I’ll draw on my experience leading and supporting R communities to show how intentional community management contributes to long-term software sustainability.

In April of 2024, we, the R-Ladies Global Leadership Team, opened the “Re-branding from R-Ladies to R-Ladies+” GitHub issue to address the organization’s need to be more explicit about our mission to serve underrepresented gender minorities beyond cis women while preserving the established identity of our organization and also recognizing global variation in the ability to safely do so.
In this talk, we will review practical, evidence-based strategies for organizing and designing your lessons and materials, explaining concepts at the level of your students (beginners, proficient, and experts), using relevant examples, checking for understanding (formative assessment versus summative assessment), and connecting with students (the power of feedback, motivation, active learning vs. passive learning) so that you can be more effective the next time you find yourself in a teaching position.
