Organizing a regional conference of R

In October 2017, Heather Turner announced on R User Group Organizers (RUG) Slack that the R Foundation’s Conference Committee was interested in hosting R events with an academic focus in regions not currently covered by useR!.

She also shared it on the R-Ladies organizers Slack and sent a direct message to me and Laura Ación, asking if the two of us would be encouraged to organize a conference in our region. Other R-Ladies read these messages, and in less than a week, we had already organized our first video conference to think about how to face the challenge. I was one of those people in that video call where we founded LatinR. This quick response was not just luck but the consequence of a year in which the R community - through local RUGs and social media presence - grew significantly in South America.

By mid-November everything was already defined: a name, a place, a date, and a motivated international organizing committee. The first edition was held in Buenos Aires, Argentina, the second in Santiago de Chile, Chile, COVID made the third, originally scheduled in Montevideo, Uruguay, take place virtually, as will be the fourth edition during 2021.

In the first edition, I was not a chair because it was held within the framework of the JAIIO, as a result of my contact and proposal to the Argentine Society of Informatics and Operations Research, and I was already fulfilling the role of chair in another symposium within the conference. So in that edition and the second, I was an active member of the organizing committee, becoming chair during the 2020 and 2021 editions.

The conference brought important personalities from the R world to South America for the first time as keynotes and instructors. The conference is trilingual, so that those who speak Spanish, Portuguese, and English can participate. Last year we got talks, keynotes, and tutorials in all three languages.

The entire conference is done with volunteer work.

Organizando una conferencia regional de R

En octubre de 2017, Heather Turner anunció en el Slack de Organizadores de Grupos de Usuarios de R (RUG) que el Comité de Conferencias de la R Foundation estaba interesado en la aparición de eventos sobre R con un enfoque académico en regiones que no se encuentran actualmente cubiertas por useR!.

También lo compartió en el Slack de organizadoras de R-Ladies y nos envió un mensaje directo a mi y a Laura Ación, preguntandonos si entre las dos nos animábamos a organizar una conferencia en nuestra región. Otras R-Ladies leyeron estos mensajes y en menos de una semana ya teníamos organizada nuestra primera videoconferencia para pensar cómo enfrentar el desafío. Yo fui una de esas personas en esa video llamada que fundamos LatinR. Esta rápida respuesta no fue solo suerte, sino la consecuencia de un año en el que la comunidad de R –a través de los RUGs locales y la presencia en redes sociales– creció significativamente en Sudamérica.

Para mediados de noviembre ya estaba todo definido: un nombre, un lugar, una fecha y un comité organizador internacional motivado. La primera edición se realizó en Buenos Aires, Argentina, la segunda en Santiago de Chile, Chile, el COVID hizo que la tercera, programada en un principio en Montevideo, Uruguay, se realice de forma virtual, al igual que la cuarta edición durante 2021.

En la primera edición no fui chair porque se realizó en el marco de las JAIIO, a partir de mi contacto y propuesta a la Sociedad Argentina de Informática e Investigación Operativa, y yo ya cumplía el rol de chair en otro simposio dentro de las jornadas. Por lo que en esa edición y en la segunda fui un activo miembro del comité organizador, pasando a ser chair durante la edición 2020 y 2021.

La conferencia logró que personalidades importantes del mundo R vinieran por primera vez a sudamérica como keynotes y como instructores para los tutoriales. La conferencia es trilingüe, para que quienes hablan Español, Portugués e Inglés puedan participar. El año pasado logramos charlas, keynotes y tutoriales en los tres idiomas.

Toda la conferencia se hace con trabajo voluntario.
