Measuring and Assessing Open Source Project Impact and Community Health. A CZI EOSS Community Call Resource

Open source software (OSS) projects are increasingly interested in tracking the impact of their packages and the health of their communities. The motivation to measure these attributes comes from both internal needs and external demands: Internally, project leaders use these measurements to set development roadmaps, make strategic decisions about resource allocation, and ensure that they are providing a welcoming, productive environment for contributors and users. Externally, projects use impact and health measurements to raise funds, report to funders, market their tools, and support career development for people who have contributed.

Reproducible Open Science by and for All

Over the last decade, rOpenSci has been a unique and impactful force in bringing rigor, integrity, reproducibility, openness, and diversity to scientific computing. We lead a set of interrelated activities around capacity building, community development, and research software development practices to transform science through open data, software & reproducibility. We will share examples of the metrics and tools we use in our main projects (Software Stats Peer Review, R-Universe, Champions Program, Multilingual Publishing, and Users and Maintainers Community) to register and understand their impact on four levels (individual, host institution/local community, rOpenSci, and the Open Science Community in general).

Why do I teach?

I have been teaching since I was 15 years old. It is my favorite thing in the world. On university teachers' day in Argentina, some reflections on why I teach.

In pursuit of a VISA

It took me eight months, $950, and 200 hours of work to obtain a VISA from Argentina to the United States. I missed three events in 2022, losing opportunities and affecting my mood and motivation. VISA processes are very different for each person, but there is a correlation between the difficulty level and your origin, strongly penalizing people from the global south.We must take into account these differences to design and change how we organize events, conferences, and team activities. It is essential to ensure participation.

Tell me who you hang out with and I’ll tell you who you are: a collaborative analysis using social network analysis.

Communities of practice are spaces where people share knowledge and contribute to individual and group objectives. Knowing the different types of community members, the different ways they can participate, what kind of collaborations exist, and among whom is an important input to understand the community and to be able to take actions to improve differents aspecto of the community, like members' engagement, reach a wider audience, and increase diversity, among other. In this talk, we will present an analysis of rOpenSci networks since its inception to recognize types and themes of collaborations, actors in those collaborations, and sub-communities, among other aspects. We will explain how we collect the information to feed the networks (e.g. blog post authoring, event organization, package authoring, package review, among others), how we process it, and what kind of community management actions we can take based on the results obtained. All the source code and the data that can be public will be shared on a repository.

¡El programa de campeones arrancó con todo este 2023! Nos complace informar sobre los dos primeros meses de nuestro primer programa de campeones y campeonas. En septiembre de 2022 hicimos el lanzamiento del programa, anunciando el llamado a aplicar a personas que quisieran participar. Recibimos un total de 102 solicitudes de 31 países diferentes. Setenta y cuatro solicitudes eran para campeones o campeonas y veintiocho para tareas de mentoreo.

rOpenSci Champions Program Kick off

The Champions Program got off to a great start in 2023! We’re happy to report on the first couple of months in our first run of the rOpenSci Champions Program. In September 2022, we launched the program, advertising for both mentors and mentees to apply. We received a total of 102 applications from 31 different countries. Seventy-four applications were for champions and twenty eight for mentors.

Expanding our Community through Multilingual Publishing

We are excited to announce that, with the support of the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, NumFOCUS, and the R Consortium, we have begun the process of translating rOpenSci’s materials on best practices for software development, code review, and contribution to open source projects into Spanish. As part of this effort, we are also developing guidelines and tools for translating open source resources to reach a wider audience. According to a recent report from The Linux Foundation, language access is one of the environmental barriers to equity in open source.

Hello! I am Yanina Bellini Saibene, your new community manager. I’m so excited to join rOpenSci in this role, and support such an important project in open science and in the R Community. When I saw the call for the position, I thought that my over 20 years of experience as a community builder, teacher, and researcher aligned perfectly with it. I believe in the power of open science at the service of people, that education is the best tool we have to improve lives, and that the most effective way to make changes is as part of a community.

Durante el año 2021 algunos docentes de Brasil tomaron los cursos de MetaDocencia, específicamente el Introducción al ABC para enseñar on-line. Al finalizar el curso algunas de estas personas expresaron en voz alta y en las encuestas de feedback, que sería muy útil tener el material en portugués para poder enseñar estos cursos a más docentes brasileños. En el equipo de coordinación, colaboradores y asesores habíamos empezado a discutir como podíamos ayudar a otros países que no hablan español a aprovechar y usar nuestros materiales, asi que esta propuesta podía ser una manera de dar unos primeros pasos en ese sentido.

Resultados del 11º Congreso de AgroInformática 2019

Nuevamente este año se realizó el Congreso de AgroInformática en el marco de las 48 Jornadas Argentinas de Informática que se realizan en la ciudad de Salta. Es la primera vez que el congreso visita la región NOA de nuestro país, con el objetivo de acercar este espacio científico académico a los grupos de investigación y desarrollo de la región. Este año además de los dos días tradicionales de exposición de trabajos y disertaciones, se realizó un día extra con tutoriales sobre tecnologías y herramientas informáticas para aplicar a la producción agropecuaria. Este informe presenta el material de cada día, presentaciones y trabajos de esta 11º edición del congreso.

Nueva Convocatoria del Congreso Argentino de Agroinformatica 2019

La Estación Experimental Agropecuaria de Anguil tiene una participación especial en el evento académico, debido a que es chair del Simposio una investigadora de la institución, la Mg. Yanina Bellini Saibene, además otros integrantes serán miembros del comité científico y organizador del mismo. El Congreso convoca a la presentación de trabajos de investigación y/o desarrollo relativos a las TICs aplicadas a problemáticas agropecuaria, agroindustrial y medio ambiental.
